a castle in Milan...

We went by a castle during our walking tour of Milan... I forgot the name (sorry!) but it was nice... we walked through to an open grassy area on the other side... and I think there is a museum inside as well.

Milan's heel twist on the bull

It is a tradition in Milan to twist on your heel on the testicles of the bull... one of the mosaics on the floor inside a plaza next to the Duomo.

I did this... but I also put a finger to my nose as I twisted... as silly, extra made-up luck!

...I'm going to like living here  : )

And the building where we were:

Milan Cathedral - Duomo

The duomo in Milan is awesome... and probably the most well-known structure in the city.

Fun fact... the duomo took nearly SIX CENTURIES to complete! (And they often joke that it's still not done... and never will be. There is constantly work being done on it.) It is the 5th largest cathedral in the world (...at least Wikipedia says so.) AND it has more than 3,400 unique statues on it!! Whoa.

We took a trip into the city for the first time and a returning teacher brought us on a 'walking tour'. A trip to the city is just a quick bus ride and then a tram ride from Opera... about 20-30 minutes. Easy enough. We began at the duomo...

milk machine

Along with the free water... there's also a milk machine in town.

You bring your own container... put it inside... pay about 10 cents... and fill it up!

Hilariously enough... the machine also has a vending machine part, which offers eggs, yogurt, rice, etc.

free water!

I do love living in a little town. Maybe next year I'll be jiving to live in the city... but for now, this feels great.

The parks in Opera even offer free water! You bring your own bottles and can fill up.

AND you even get the option of naturale or frizzante.

I plan to go a couple times a week to fill up. Whoohoo!

IKEA

I have now been to an IKEA! I had never been before... but knew I'd love it... in a dangerous way.

Keeping to about 150 euro, I think I did pretty well at holding myself back. As soon as I got the things back to my apartment, they really helped pull it together! I put a desk from the bedroom downstairs to store in my cantina... and in its place put a clothing rack and shoe rack. They're great.

a car ride and cappuccino!

Earlier this week I had a GREAT start to my day!

I was walking to the bus stop... carrying my air pump for the bicycle that I bought off a returning teacher, which was at school. ...As I was getting to the main road (near the bus stop), the bus that I needed was just driving by. ...D'OH!

I knew I'd have about 10 or 12 minutes to wait for another to come along... but no big deal.

As I was sitting on the bus stop's bench, a little car drove by, slowed down, and reversed.

The window went down... and then I realized that it was Tina! ...The HR person from my school. She's the most amazing woman... nice, genuine, and helped me a TON with my paperwork to get here!

She gave me a ride in to school, which was great... AND we stopped on the way for a cappuccino at a small cafe near school.

Now THAT is how I picture living in Italy to be.

...A wonderful start to the day.

I have had a wonderful beginning to my time here. The school I am at seems great. It will be a lot of work but the people here have been incredibly welcoming and many of them say that they love the library! So far so good...  : )
